In the aftermath of the European election issues regarding solidarity between EU-members, the meaningfulness of European integration, as well as the rise or Euro-sceptical attitudes and parties are discussed intensely. The project BeE-Be(com)ing European is dealing with these questions. However, it also exceeds these issues and asks what competences European citizens need nowadays to fully participate in a European society.
As a response to these issues, the project’s consortium, which consists of eight European educational institutions, developed a workshop concept for adult basic education. This concept does not only deal with European issues and the challenges linked to basic education that teachers and learners are facing, but also tries to find ways to motivate disadvantaged learners to learn autonomously and become aware of their own competences – regardless of whether these competences were acquired in formal or informal learning processes. BeE developed an innovative workshop concept that can be adapted to different target groups, institutional settings and topic areas. The workshop concept is being implemented at the partners’ institutions and will be utilized in a European workshop series starting in October 2014 in Malta. Furthermore, the workshop concept will be available online on the project’s website for public use. The project has a duration of 2 years (December 2012 – November 2014). The project has been funded with the support of the LLP Programme/Grundtvig of the European Union.

The workshop concept addresses educational staff. It includes different approaches on how to motivate (disadvantaged) learners, stimulate their participation in courses and promote autonomous learning. The workshop concept contains seven modules dealing with different topic areas. The topics are
- Basic Education in Europe – What should it contain?
- What does it mean to be European? What consequences does this have on Basic Education?
- Which competences do the learners already have at their disposal? How can learners become aware of their competences and how can they be used in basic educational courses?
- What is self-regulated learning and how can it be promoted?
The workshop concept is meant to take place during face-to-face workshops as the main learning experience and pedagogy is centred around a series of hands-on workshops. It can also be used by self-learners who would like to gain new ideas in the above described topic areas to assist them in the planning of their own courses.
First BeE-Workshop October 8th – 10th 2014 - Apply for our Workshop in Malta
The first workshop of a series will be held in Malta, in October 2014. If you are interested in learning and participating in discussions regarding the issues of basic education in a European context, whilst learning about innovative ways to motivate your students and promote their self-confidence or else, if you want to think about the different possibilities of self-regulated learning and teaching, this is the course for you! You will have the possibility to exchange experiences and ideas with other teachers and trainers from all over Europe in an open and inspiring context. The BeE-course will take place once a year each October (dates are subject to change). The workshop is eligible for an Erasmus+ staff mobility. Please ask your employing institution for respective funds or opportunities to apply for funds next year. The next application deadline will be around March 2015.
