Imagine if you couldn’t read for pleasure. Or fill out a form, understand a text message, or follow the directions on a medicine bottle.

Alarmingly, 1 in 7 Australians reach adulthood without the reading and writing skills they need to complete the kinds of everyday tasks most of us take for granted.

And if you are homeless, low literacy makes life even more difficult. It's harder to access the services you need, to manage your health, let alone to find stable work and housing.

That's why we're asking you to support Footpath Literacy which takes literacy help out onto the streets. 

Accessing reading and writing help as an adult is not straightforward. Services are over-stretched and many adults with low literacy are ashamed and reluctant to return to anything like a classroom.

Our Footpath Literacy expert will work with people who are homeless to develop the reading and writing skills they need.

Improving an adult's reading and writing skills is life-changing. It gives people hope, confidence and turns lives around. It makes a tangible and lasting difference, empowering people to take a more active role in their own lives and in their communities. It makes for a fairer Australia.

That's why Footpath Literacy is so vital. It supports people to take the first step, connects them to ongoing assistance and helps them make a new start.
