New White Paper on the benefits and challenges that immersive technologies

Lavinia Hirsu and Gabriella Rodolico, both members of CR&DALL, are co-authors of a new University of Glasgow White Paper on the benefits and challenges that immersive technologies like virtual reality can bring to education. This work has been carried out within the Scoping Extended Educational Realities (SEER) research group led by Professor Neil McDonnell of the School of Humanities.

This White Paper is based on a study supported by funding from Meta, and has made a series of recommendations to the Extended Reality* (XR) technology industry, government and education sector.

A press release from the University of Glasgow can be found at this link, and for convenience of subscribers is attached together with an associated Report that lays out the research, thinking, and argument in detail and provides case studies, an illustrative example of how the team sees a future lesson which makes use of XR technology.

The press release quotes Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs, Meta who said: “This white paper adds to a growing evidence base that demonstrates just how powerful metaverse technologies can be in education. What’s really encouraging to see is the optimism educators have about how these technologies can inspire students and improve learning. We will take the recommendations on board as we continue to build these tools, and we hope policymakers and those in the education sector will learn from this work too.”

Congratulations to Lavinia, Gabriella and the team.
