The EIS recently completed Phase One of our Scottish Government funded Anti-Poverty Professional Learning Programme for teachers. Having done so, we wish to draw your attention to our resulting report ‘Joining the Dots on Poverty: Putting Professional Learning into Action’.

We thought you may be interested to hear about PACT’s human rights-based approach to poverty, and how we have introduced teachers, as well as other education professionals, to using this approach in their own learning and teaching about poverty – a human rights violation manifest every day in the lives of so many of our young people and their families and communities.  

Our anti-poverty professional learning is designed to deepen understanding on poverty and is specifically contextualised within a framework which includes the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, as well as both the United Nation’s World Programme for Human Rights Education and Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training, alongside a research base spanning domestic and international sources. The Report gives feedback and evaluation on the Project, including a pilot study from colleagues in the University of Glasgow. 

As you will see, this innovative programme was very well received, with participants already starting to take the learning forward in Scotland’s classrooms and schools. It has generated much interest, and plans are currently underway for Phase Two of the Programme, with eventual plans for a country-wide roll-out.  

The Report also makes a range of Recommendations for government and professionals across the field in Scotland – including on initial teacher education - and we respectfully draw your attention to them as potentially of interest.
