CR&DALL Seminar 2010 Series: "Learning, Democracy and Community: Two International Studies on Engagement and Change"Presenter(s):
Learning, engagement, community, social change, citizenship, democracy, politics and power have been at the heart of the historic discourses of adult education throughout the world. The past 25 years have seen major shifts in the government funding of the education of adults towards market-oriented, vocational, professional and generally instrumental approaches. At the same time there are new discourses of ‘engagement’ emerging within higher education institutions and new discursive spaces for critique, study and reflection. This presentation looks at two distinct studies being undertaken by Budd and Darlene respectively.

CR&DALL Seminar 2010 Series: "Learning to Do: Learning Practice"Presenter(s):
Presentation: Most theories of learning focus primarily on the cognitive dimension but recognise that the action one is significant. If we accept Husserl’s claim that we live in our acts – then the ‘doing’ dimension should actually receive at least equal emphasis to the cognitive. This seminar starts with my own work on learning and then explores a theory of learning by doing. Thereafter it focuses on professional practice and offers a theory of learning practice which could impinge on our understanding of learning in the workplace.

CR&DALL Seminar 2011 Series: "Tertiary lifelong learning as tool for the management of social vulnerability"Presenter(s):
The main challenges for the ageing knowledge economy are the constant upgrading of the skills of the working population and the mitigation of both new and existing social risks. In an aging society surrounded by a globalised knowledge economy, people in mid-life are increasingly exposed to social risks of exclusion from the labour market. Many are excluded from formal Lifelong Learning (LLL), specifically Tertiary Lifelong Learning (TLL) within universities and colleges. The access of mid-life learners to TLL and their retention in the system has an increasing relevance for the socio-economic sustainability of the ageing European knowledge society.

CR&DALL Seminar 2011 Series: "Global Dialogue 2"Presenter(s): Mike Osborne
On the 17th of October, CR&DALL, the Centre for Research and Development in Adult and Lifelong Learning, hosted a gathering of senior figures in higher education from all five continents. This meeting of minds considered the place of universities in our communities of the future. The individuals participating in the ‘Global Dialogue 2’ represent all of the significant networks that exist world-wide in this area of study. Held in collaboration with the Global Alliance on Community-Engaged Research (GACER) the ‘Global Dialogue 2’ is chaired from the University of Glasgow by Professor M.J. Osborne (Director of CR&DALL and Co-Director of the PASCAL International Observatory) and by Professor Rajesh Tandon (Chair of GACER and President of Participatory Research Institute Asia (PRIA), India).
