Presenters:
Ann-Marie Karadia is Access Officer at The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). She has worked on QAA’s management of the Access Recognition Scheme for almost 20 years and has been actively involved in a range of qualification development work, most recently development and implementation of the subject descriptor for medicine and the review of the grading scheme. Her current responsibilities also include data analysis to support the full range of QAA’s Access to HE activities. She joined QAA in 1999 where she worked with the Director of Institutional review and gained a valuable insight into quality assurance within higher education. She joined the Access to HE team in 2001.
A passionate advocate for participation in education and for lifelong learning, she is proud to work in a role that facilitates progression to higher education and graduate careers for thousands of adults through the Access to HE Diploma. A mature student herself, she graduated from the Open University in 2006, having studied while working and raising a family. She is governor at a local secondary school and has been an active member of PTAs throughout her children’s school career.
John Butcher is Director, Access, Open and Cross-curricular Innovation at the Open University (UK). He re-joined the OU in 2012 after senior roles in Learning and Teaching at Derby, Northampton and Falmouth universities. His interest in widening participation began early in his teaching career when heading up progression to higher education in a sixth form, and subsequently in tutoring and teacher training roles for the OU. His research interests are in the areas of part-time and adult higher education, Access programmes, inclusive assessment and mentoring. His most recent works include national reports published by the Higher Education Policy Institute (adult learners), the Office for Fair Access (adult outreach) and the Higher Education Academy (part-time learners), and journal articles on the language of assessment and progression from Access modules.
