The impact of research has been growing ever more important not only in its own right, but as a factor that feeds into funding decisions at both institutional and individual levels. We are therefore pleased to present a Working Paper written by the Director of PASCAL and CR&DALL, Professor Mike Osborne, in which he assesses the cumulative impact of research that assesses the cumulative effect of research that has systematically measured, mapped and analysed learning provision at urban/regional level, contributing internationally to developing learning cities over decades.
A new book "Adult Education and Social Justice: International Perspectives" was published just before Xmas 2023 in honour of the adult educator par excellence, Professor Lalage Bown, who died just over two years ago. Edited by Maria Slowey, Heribert Hinzen, Michael Omolewa and myself, it contains contributions from many esteemed adult educators, many from the core CR&DALL team and others beyond, particularly those with connections to Africa.
Core CR&DALL member Anna Wilson, University of Glasgow, has recently launched a new project funded by the UK's EPSRC through the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre. CC(U)S Futures is a collaboration between staff at the University of Glasgow, University of Stirling and University of Strathclyde. It is developing Place-Based Participatory Speculative Fiction as a tool for exploring workforce understandings of and imaginary constructions about the possible impacts on local landscapes and lives resulting from large-scale implementation of carbon capture, use and storage (CC(U)S) technologies.
Throughout Islamic history, various cities have served as flourishing centres of learning, contributing significantly to intellectual, scientific, and cultural advancements. While the historical periods of peak intellectual activity may have passed and traditional centres of Islamic learning faced challenges and declines, efforts are ongoing to revitalize and preserve the rich intellectual heritage of these cities.
The next and 3rd Leverhulme Lecture from Professor Nematollah Azizi, University of Kurdistan, Iran and Visiting Leverhulme Professor at the University of Glasgow, entitled, A Reflection on the Philosophical Foundation of Islamic Leadership will be held on Tuesday, 5th December 2023, at 7.00 pm at the Multi-Faith Centre, University of Derby. The Gendered Journeys project is an interdisciplinary, international mixed-methods project that explored gendered inequalities in India, Rwanda, and the UK using online surveys, interviews, and eco-mapping techniques to address persistent and growing gender gaps in STEM study and working, particularly in global south contexts. The team has engaged in a wide range of impact and outreach activities, including eco and network mapping activities at ESRC Festival of Social Sciences, ARCadia festival, Open house for the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) 2023 as well as Reimagining the Contemporary in Indian Education Conference held at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India.
On Thursday, 19th October 2023, Swansea University hosted a Leverhulme Lecture titled “Pedagogical Capabilities in Islam to Create, Maintain and Develop Justice-oriented Learning Cities”. The lecture was presented by Nematollah Azizi, a Leverhulme Professor at the University of Glasgow and a faculty member at the University of Kurdistan in Iran. This visit was organized by Swansea University, along the International PASCAL Observatory collaboration, where Swansea Learning City and Swansea University are active members and were happy to host Professor Azizi as their guest from their partner University of Glasgow. The lecture by Professor Azizi aimed to explore the role of Islamic pedagogical capabilities in creating and maintaining justice-oriented learning cities.
